At Rainwater Farms, we produce our herbs and microgreens in a climate-controlled indoor environment through aquaponics, a symbiotic system that integrates aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (soilless plant cultivation). The fish provide nutrients for the plants, and the plants help clean the water for the fish.
We use special equipment to control the temperature, light, and water conditions, making it possible to grow fresh, nutritious food all year round. The plants grown are free from pesticides and herbicides, and the fish are raised without antibiotics.
Here’s How We Do It
We raise healthy tilapia fish in carefully designed tanks that promote their well-being and growth. We feed the fish and maintain the water column parameters based on the desired crops produced. As the fish live and grow, they produce waste.
The fish waste, rich in essential nutrients, is pumped into hydroponic beds where our herbs and vegetables grow. The plants absorb these nutrients, which act as natural fertilizers, helping them grow strong and healthy.
After the plants have taken up the nutrients, the cleaned water is recirculated back to the fish tanks, creating a sustainable loop. This means less water is used than in traditional farming, and no chemical fertilizers are needed.
